John stands to answer the knock at the door. As soon as it opens, I hear Sarah’s unhappy voice.

“Yeah, good morning to you, too,” she says to John, before finding her way through the expansive living room. She sits on the couch in a huff, tossing her purse onto the coffee table.

“I think you owe me an explanation, Grilli,” she says, glaring at him. “And at the very least, a cup of coffee would be nice!” John looks at me and rolls his eyes before accepting the demotion to coffee boy. He steps behind the bar and sets the machine to brew.

“I’m sure the agent was a surprise…”

“Surprise! Yes, and I’m sure he was surprised, too, when I almost plowed right into Agent What’s-His-Name as I walked out the door.”

“His name is Dale Matthews, Sarah.”

Erik and I watch the two of them sparring back and forth. It’s a very rare occasion that John backs down to anyone. I suppose I should have warned him that Sarah can be a force of nature when she’s upset.

“I don’t care what his name is. I don’t want a guard dog. Now why did you move into this room?”

John frowns, then pours a cup of coffee for Sarah. He sits on the couch, comfortably out of her personal space. Or maybe he’s expecting to be slapped. I can’t tell which.

“Dr. Wells, this is non-negotiable.” Sarah raises her eyes at him as she sips from the cup. If John doesn’t keep talking, he’s going to lose this battle.

“Jeff broke into the villa last night. He had a gun. We have no idea whether Kincaid is here, or if Jeff was aware of your presence. As long as you are in Las Vegas, in this hotel, you are in danger. He managed to kill Agent Levy, so, if you don’t mind, I’ll be damned if I’m going to let him kill you. Ronnie would never forgive me.”

By the time John stops speaking, Sarah’s jaw is in her lap. She looks at me, her eyes huge and concerned.

“Oh, my God…did he…how did he get in? Did he touch you or…Where is he now?”

Rambling, cryptic questions shoot out of her mouth, and I look at John, tipping my head to the side. He stands without a word, and disappears into the bedroom.

“He got into the villa while we were…” I hesitate, feeling the flush tingling in my cheeks.

“While we were having sex,” Erik says, finishing my sentence, relieving me of the uncomfortable admission.

“He wanted to watch.”

Sarah slaps a hand over her mouth, from both disgust and anger. “Just like his insane brother. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, I guess.”

Erik recounts the entire ordeal, from the moment Jeff sat down, to the shooting, and eventually telling her about Agent Levy. The manner of his death is more than enough to scare Sarah.

Within a few minutes, John returns to the living room. He’s showered, although still wearing the same rumpled clothes from yesterday. He sits next to Sarah again, who is much more agreeable than when he left.
